Is the Libertarian Party a "real" political party?
Yes. The Libertarian Party has been in existence in the U.S. since 1971 and has filled candidates in every major election ever since.
In Michigan the Libertarian Party consistently receives more votes than all other "minor" parties and independent candidates combined. As such we are not just "a third party " but THE THIRD PARTY.
We are required to file all the same paper work and
follow the same rules as the Republicans & Democrats. We are
equally organized through what we call affiliates. Each of them will
have their own slightly different rules and regulations created by
their members, called bylaws. They can usually be found on their
website. Ours are right here.
Do Libertarians get elected?
Some Libertarians run to win, and don't. Some run to simply educate and hope to change the position of the major parties. Some Libertarians run to win and do. In Oakland County, we currently have one elected Libertarian in office: Andy LeCureaux of the Hazel Park City Council.
Some Libertarians will put an R or a D after their name. Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) is a life member of the Libertarian Party.
